The Underwater Acoustic Communication and Networking Technology Research Team mainly engages in researches of underwater acoustic communication and networking, underwater localization, underwater target detection and identification, etc. Among those research areas, underwater acoustic communication and networking technology is the team’s major research focus. Aiming at the international frontiers, the team solves the key technology and scientific problems in underwater acoustic communications. Combining the theory study and engineering practice, the team develops underwater acoustic communication modems for different application requirements. The team’s researches include: OFDM based high-speed underwater acoustic communication, spread spectrum based long range communication, biomimetics based covert underwater acoustic communication, the new vector hydrophone based full-duplex underwater acoustic communication, and so on. The team is now in the leading position in underwater acoustic communications and networking in China, and is among the advanced level in the world. The team consists of 1 professor, 4 associate professors, 3 lecturers, 18 doctoral students (including 3 foreign students), and 42 mater’s students. In the recent 5 years, the team has undertaken 2 projects from National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), 1 project from National Key Research & Development (R&D) Plan, 1 project from basic research of national defense, 7 projects from National Natural Science Foundation of China, 5 projects from equipment pre-research and a number of commercial funded projects. The team has won 1 first prize of Marine Engineering Science and Technology Award, 1 second prize of National Defense Invention Award, 1 second prize of The Chinese Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (CSNAME) Science and Technology Award, 1 third prize of National Defense Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 third prize of Heilongjiang Science and Technology Progress Award, etc. The team is led by Professor Qiao Gang, who is the academic leader in the area of underwater acoustic communications. He has won the National Excellent Science and Technology Worker Award, Heilongjiang Province Youth Science and Technology Award, and many other honorary titles. The team has published more than 100 academic papers indexed by SCI and EI, and has been granted more than 30 invention patents.
The team attaches great importance to international and domestic exchanges and cooperation. It has academic exchanges on a regular basis with University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), University of Washington, University of Connecticut, Sapienza University of Rome, etc. The team has sent doctoral and master’s students to University of Washington, University of Connecticut, Northeastern University, Newcastle University, Technische Universität München, The University of Electro-Communications in Japan for study and academic exchange. The team has established good cooperative relationships with Institute of Acoustics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhejiang University, Xiamen University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, and many other domestic institutes and universities. The research institutes of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, China National Aviation Corporation and other groups, China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC), and the large IT companies such as Huawei, ZTE and so on are the main employers of the graduated students from the team.
