The Underwater Acoustic Localization and Target Detection Research Team is the leading talent echelon in Heilongjiang Province, one of the first Xinghai academic teams in Harbin Engineering University. The team has a total of 17 faculty members, including 6 professors, 3 associate professors, and 5 lecturers. The team members have won the National Excellent 100 Doctoral Dissertation Award, Science and Technology Award for Chinese Youth, Special Government Allowances of the State Council, National Outstanding Young Teachers in Colleges and Universities, National Excellent Science and Technology Workers, Distinguished Professor of Longjiang Scholar, Youth Science and Technology Award of Heilongjiang Province, Excellent Middle-aged and Young Experts in Heilongjiang Province and other honorary titles. The team's excellent academic atmosphere and all-round practical training opportunities provide a growth environment that combines theory and practice for graduate students.

The team has been dedicating in the research areas of underwater acoustic positioning and navigation, underwater acoustic detection, underwater acoustic confrontation, unmanned acoustic system, and high resolution imaging sonar for many years. The team has independently developed underwater acoustic positioning systems based on long baseline (LBL), short baseline (SBL) and ultra-short baseline (USBL), the functions of which include the high resolution terminal trajectory measurement and the high frame rate long range complete trajectory measurement; the series of underwater acoustic control equipment which are applicable to both cooperative and non-cooperative targets; and the series of smart target equipment including stationary target, real vessel target, and mobile target. The team has researched and developed over 80% of the underwater acoustic positioning and navigation equipment for navy range, and participated in the sea tests of almost all of the new models of torpedo, mine, and submarine developed in China in the recent years. The team was the first to carry out the researches on the unmanned passive detection technology, and was the first in China to realize the unmanned autonomous passive detection, which builds solid foundations for the research of the detection capacity of unnamed vehicles. The team has independently developed the first set of three-dimensional imaging sonar and the first set of acoustic lens sonar prototype in China, and was the first to be able to carry out high resolution measurement in turbid waters.

The team has undertaken more than 50 national, provincial and ministerial level projects, including the projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Program on Key Research Projects, pre-research projects from navy and the general armament department, naval equipment R&D projects and so on. The total research funding received by team exceeded 100 million yuan in 2014. The team has won the first prize of National Defense Science and Technology Progress Award for once, the second prize of which for once, and the third prize of which for twice; the third prize of the National Defense Technology Invention Award for once; and the second prize of other provincial and ministerial level science and technology progress awards for 10 times, and the third prize of those awards for 3 times. The team has published nearly 300 academic papers, more than 130 of which are indexed by SCI and EI. The team has been granted for nearly 50 national invention patents, and has trained more than 30 doctoral students and more than 160 master’s students.
